THE PREDICTION

World number 33 Jiri Lehecka is the top seed at the Umag Open and he played like it on Thursday, beating former champion Dominic Thiem in straight sets. The 21-year-old is enjoying the best season of his young career so far with a run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the round of 16 at Wimbledon proving his all-court credentials but he is certainly at his least effective, for now, on clay. That makes this a really intriguing first encounter with world number 76 Matteo Arnaldi, who is through the quarter-finals without dropping a set in two matches on his favoured surface. The Italian took Lorenzo Musetti to three sets at the Gstaad Open last week after a strong result over Emil Ruusuvuori to suggest there sets in this match for both players but Lehecka’s raw power looks like needing a top 40 challenge at least. Back the Czech to win outright here but consider leaving this match out of an accumulator.
