THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Jiri Lehecka came into the Croatia Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 33rd after his recent run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The Czech impressed with back-to-back wins over Eastbourne finalists Francisco Cerundolo and Tommy Paul but his five-set marathon battle against Paul took its toll in the following round, where blisters forced him to retire against Daniil Medvedev. Former world number three Dominic Thiem very nearly claimed a huge five-set win of his own over Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon but the Austrian just missed out over two days of rain delays. Thiem claimed his second of now 17 ATP titles, 10 of which have come on clay, here in Umag back in 2015 but he has struggled to find anything like his best level since returning from serious wrist surgery last season. Lehecka starts a little cold here after receiving a bye to the round of 16 and Thiem is certainly the more comfortable on clay, especially with a win over Facundo Bagnis on his legs from Monday. Back the Austrian to earn at least a set in this tight first meeting between the two but it is wise to leave this match out of an accumulator.
