THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula reached the semi-finals of the Washington Open, where she won her maiden WTA title in 2019, before a very competitive three-set defeat to eventual runner-up Maria Sakkari. The fourth seed received a bye to the second round here in Montreal and she should be considered a serious title contender this week after claiming her second WTA title at the Guadalajara Masters late last year. World number 61 Yulia Putintseva is a dangerous foe, though, and well capable of tennis behind her current deflated ranking. The Kazakh made the main draw as a lucky loser after falling qualifying and she predictably thrived on her second chance to beat Bernarda Pera in straight sets. Pegula beat Putintseva in the quarter-finals here last season and she can be counted on not to underestimate her tricky foe’s talents here. Take the American to win outright, although straight sets should come through.
