World number four Jessica Pegula is the top seed at the Washington Open four years on from winning her maiden WTA title here. The 29-year-old has since reached six Grand Slam quarter-finals, including each of the last three in Melbourne, and she capped off a career-best season last year with victory at the Guadalajara Masters before qualifying for the WTA Finals for the first time. However, 2023 has so far been something of a comedown on 2022 with far fewer deep runs than her previous efforts – although a quarter-final exit in three sets to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon has aged very well. 21-year-old Peyton Stearns has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour to recently set a career-high WTA world ranking of 55th and she beat Magdalena Frech in straight sets on Tuesday in an impressive way to bounce back from losing in qualifying.
The lucky loser has been unlucky, though, in drawing one of the shortest straws in the draw. Whilst Pegula may be struggling against the better players she is still something of a flat-track against players ranked below her.
