THE PREDICTION
World number three Jessica Pegula finished runner-up to Ons Jabeur here last season in tight three sets and her sheer consistency over the last few seasons suggests she can emulate that run this season. The 29-year-old has looked solid so far in two hard-fought straight-set wins over Magdalena Frech and Marie Bouzkova but she will face fierce opposition here from a vengeful Martina Trevisan after Pegula beat the Italian in the United Cup final back in January. Trevisan, also 29. Will set a new career-high of around 18th after also making the round of 16 without dropping a set and whilst she looked the solid underdog against Pegula on a hardcourt at the United Cup she is one of the more ‘specialist’ clay-courters on tour. Trevisan reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season before defeat to eventual runner-up Coco Gauff and if she finds her best level here it would not be a total surprise to see her through. Back the far more dependable Pegula to come through outright but consider leaving this tricky match out of an accumulator.
