World number four Jessica Pegula passed a significant test on Friday with a huge comeback over in-form Elina Svitolina. The 29-year-old won her maiden WTA title here back in 2019 and she looks the slight favourite to double down this weekend amongst a hugely talented last four, with a potential final against doubles partner Coco Gauff on the cards. World number nine Maria Sakkari was forced to play twice on Friday due to rain delaying play on Thursday but she coped impressively, beating Leylah Fernandez and Madison Keys in straight sets apiece to look dangerous. The 28-year-old has every chance of winning the Washington Open this week but there is an unfortunate mark on her record at this stage of tournaments as Sakkari has lost all five of her semi-finals reached this season and each of her last six, with her last final lost to Pegula at the Guadalajara Masters last October. The pair share a 4-3 head-to-head in the Greek’s favour but Pegula has won three of their five meetings since the start of last season to look the favourite here. Back the American to win outright.
