JESSICA PEGULA
World number four Jessica Pegula is through to the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time and suddenly looking like a factor in the race for the title. The 29-year-old brought some middling form, by her standards, into her least successful major tournament at SW19 but after surviving an early scare against Lauren Davis she has blasted past Cristina Bucsa and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in an admittedly kind run so far. Pegula has reached the quarter-finals in five of her last 10 Grand Slam campaigns before coming unstuck against top players, most recently Victoria Azarenka at the Australian Open.
LESIA TSURENKO
World number 60 Lesia Tsurenko survived an incredible third-set tiebreak that lasted over 40 minutes on Friday, edging past an inspired Ana Bogdan 20-18 to win from a set down. The 34-year-old may struggle to recover in time from the longest women’s tiebreak in Grand Slam history but she should at least take confidence from her efforts into this very tough round of 16 clash, her first at SW19. Tsurenko reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before suffering an injury that saw her conceded to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.
THE PREDICTION
Lesia Tsurenko came back from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula at Indian Wells in 2019 but Pegula was a wildcard that year at the beginning of what proved to be her breakthrough season on tour. The American has worked hard to become one of the most consistent players on tour, particularly at the more prestigious events, but there is little doubt that grass is her weakest – or at least most unfamiliar – surface. Tsurenko has impressed on grass over the last two seasons but it is hard to see her starting this match with a full tank after Friday’s herculean efforts. Back Pegula to win outright here with three sets about as likely as two.
