World number three Jessica Pegula and number seven Coco Gauff will team up in the Women’s Doubles later on Friday but not before a fascinating clash in the quarter-finals of the Singles. 29-year-old Pegula conceded just four games to Jasmine Paolini in a show of strength on Thursday, handing the Italian a second-set bagel, but she came off worse in her most recent match against Gauff in a straight-sets defeat at this stage of the Eastbourne International in June. 19-year-old Gauff certainly brings the better recent form after winning her fourth and most prestigious WTA title at the Washington Open last week, beating Maria Sakkari in the final after the Greek had ousted Pegula in the semis. Gauff earned a second-set bagel of her own on Thursday with a ruthless victory over Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, snapping the Czech’s nine-match winning streak whilst extending her own to six.
The teenager has looked so much more confident on court since adding to her coaching team and she has not dropped a set on hardcourts since the start of the swing to look the favourite here. Take Gauff to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors with three sets a distinct possibility.
