THE PREDICTION

Former world number five Jelena Ostapenko stormed to victory at Roland-Garros back in 2017, lifting her maiden Grand Slam title at barely 20 years old after coming back from a set down to upset Simona Halep. The Latvian has won a total of five WTA titles, four since Roland-Garros, but she had not reached the quarter-finals of a major since Wimbledon in 2018 until doing so at the Australian Open this January, where she lost to eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina. Ostapenko has made it to the third round at Roland-Garros just once since winning here but a run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open last week, again ended by eventual champion Rybakina, suggests she could be a genuine threat this time around. World number 91 Tereza Martincova was the surprise winner of their only previous encounter back in 2021 on grass but a three-match losing streak on tour and a tough season so far suggests this rematch will be one-way traffic. Back Ostapenko to win in straight sets.
