THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova took Iga Swiatek to a first set tiebreak before falling away in straight sets this time last week in Montreal. The current world number 25 has endured an odd season, starting so strongly with a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open before largely disappearing from the conversation but she is always a serious threat on hardcourts and well capable of bursting into form at random. World number 20 Jelena Ostapanko is another player who suffers plenty of peaks and troughs but the Latvian is probably at her best on the ‘natural surfaces’ of grass and clay. A three-set defeat to the returning Jennifer Brady last week was a shock but not a total upset given her opponent’s surprising level, although it only serves to make this a tougher call. Pliskova leads their head-to-head 5-4 but, notably, Ostapenko leads 3-2 on hardcourts after victory in Adelaide in January. This match is well worth leaving out of an accumulator but otherwise back the Latvian to earn at least a set as the likelier to edge through.
