THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Jelena Ostapenko won Roland-Garros in 2017 and she has reached at least the quarter-finals in both Wimbledon and Melbourne with a blind spot at the US Open, having never made it past the third here. The 26-year-old was upset in the firs round by Qinwen Zheng last summer and she has attracted another tough draw here against in-form Jasmine Paolini, who is well capable of causing an upset if Ostapenko is not at her best. 27-year-old Paolini comes into the US Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 35th after recently finishing runner-up to the aforementioned Zheng at the Palermo Ladies Open and more recently reaching the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time in Cincinnati. Ostapenko won her sixth WTA title at the Birmingham Classic in June but she has struggled to improve on that week since, losing three of her last five matches on tour. The suitably sensible call is taking Ostapenko to win outright but the shrewd move might be backing the Italian to earn at least a set.
