World number 21 Jelena Ostapenko needed three sets to beat in-form Jasmine Paolini on Monday as she continues to struggle with maintaining her fearsome best in a match. The 2017 Roland-Garros champion has seen each of her last five matches go to deciding sets in an odd depreciation in form after claiming her sixth WTA title at the Birmingham Classic back in June but she is, arguably, at her least effective on hardcourts. 20-year-old Elina Avanesyan certainly stands a chance at the upset here after beating Alize Cornet in three sets on Monday. The Russian could break the top 60 for the first time no matter the outcome here but she has enjoyed some big results this season, most recently stunning Daria Kasatkina at the Berlin Open en-route to a quarter-final defeat by eventual runner-up Donna Vekic. Ostapenko would hate to lose to a younger up-and-comer in their first meeting but the Latvian is a tough player to back with confidence right now. Take Ostapenko to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or consider a one-off on this match to see three sets.
