THE PREDICTION
This should be another fierce battle between old foes Jelena Ostapenko and Ekaterina Alexandrova, with the Russian just edging their tour-level head-to-head 4-3 as things stand. However, Ostapenko has won each of their last two encounters, including in the semi-finals of the Adelaide International last month, to look the slight favourite but Alexandrova won their only previous meeting in a final -beating Ostapenko to the Korea Open in 2022. Ostapenko is yet to drop a set this week en-route to her fourth final this season, two in singles and two in doubles, with only Victoria Azarenka able to beat the Latvian in 2024. 29-year-old Alexandrova comes in the more battle-hardened, perhaps, after ousting defending champion Anastasia Potapova and coming back from a set down to beat Donna Vekic in a very tight contest on Saturday.
Three of their last five matches have seen three sets and four of them have seen at least a tiebreak, so consider taking both of those options to avoid the result. Otherwise, Ostapenko feels like the slight favourite on form as she targets a second title of the season.
