THE LOWDOWN
World number six Coco Gauff saw her chances at winning a famous maiden Grand Slam title this week increase significantly after Jelena Ostapenko stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek on Sunday. 19-year-old Gauff finally beat Swiatek, at the eighth time asking, en-route to the Cincinnati Masters title three weeks ago in form that saw her also surge to the Washington Open title in a transformative August on tour. Gauff has dropped three sets this campaign already but her comeback over Elise Mertens in the third round was as impressive as her assured victory over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday.
World number 21 Jelena Ostapenko came back from a set down to stun defending champion Iga Swiatek on Sunday night, thrilling the Arthur Ashe crowd with her elusive, ruthless best tennis. The 26-year-old leads Swiatek 4-0 in a head-to-head that looked in danger against the Pole, new-and-improved since their previous encounter in early 2022, but there is always the chance of a sudden drop in form after a big win where the Latvian is concerned. Ostapenko set a career-high WTA world ranking of fifth in 2018 after stunning the field to lift the 2017 Roland-Garros title in much the same way that Swiatek did three years later.
THE PREDICTION
Coco Gauff has reached the quarter-finals in New York for the second year on the spin and it took the peak level of Caroline Garcia to stun her this time last summer. Whilst former world number five Jelena Ostapenko is well capable of doing the same, she will find a new and improved version of the teenager whom she beat in straight sets at the Australian Open back in January and a partisan atmosphere on Arthur Ashe that will be hard to contend with – even for the boisterous Latvian. Only doubles partner Jessica Pegula has been able to beat Gauff since she started working with new coach Brad Gilbert at the start of August but Ostapenko should not be underestimated. Gauff’s game should match-up well with the Latvian’s power play but Ostapenko will target the forehand as much as possible. The sensible call is taking Gauff to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance but consider taking this match to see three sets on its own.
