World number 74 Stan Wawrinka will have designs on the title this week after recent improvements on tour. The 38-year-old former world number three conceded just two games to Roberto Carballes Baena on Tuesday before his opponent retired, giving him ample time to warm back up on clay but extra rest to boost his chances of progressing. Wawrinka can expect a partisan support in Gstaad as he aims for a first title here to compliment his two Swiss titles from Geneva in 2016 and 2017. The veteran impressed at Wimbledon, beating two top 50 players before coming up against eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic, and Jaume Munar should find himself overpowered in this first encounter. The world number 110 is certainly better than his current ranking suggests but recent form, other than a shock win over John Isner at Wimbledon, does not bode well for the Spaniard. Back Wawrinka to win outright here, probably in two.
