THE PREDICTION
World number 88 Jaume Munar came back from a set down to beat an impressive Matteo Arnaldi on Sunday, avenging his defeat to the Italian at the Barcelona Open last week. 25-year-old Munar has looked back to his usual self so far in Madrid after enduring a pretty poor last 12 months on tour and this is a huge opportunity for the Spaniard to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time on home soil. World number 92 Daniel Altmaier faces the same opportunity here but his journey is all the more unlikely considering he lost in qualifying. The 23-year-old was handed a rare bye to the second round as a lucky loser to replace Pablo Carreno Busta and he has made excellent use so far with straight-set victories over fellow Germans Oscar Otte and Yannick Hanfmann. Munar beat Altmaier in four sets at Roland-Garros last summer to suggest he has the edge here, particularly on home clay, but Altmaier’s momentum is dangerous given the freedom of a second chance. Three sets seem likely here so take the Spaniard to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or to edge this outright on its own.
