THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Rafael Nadal enjoyed an incredible comeback to tennis, just two weeks away from a full year’s absence through injury, with a commanding straight-sets win over old foe Dominic Thiem. The 37-year-old has rowed back from announcing a full retirement at the end of this season in a press conference before starting in Brisbane, perhaps suggesting that he feels more capable than he had dared hope to, but the next few weeks of tennis remain solidly in the building-back category despite such a brilliant start. World number 101 Jason Kubler will enjoy the occasion of a first meeting with Nadal, with whom he was once compared as a promising Aussie junior over a decade ago, but he rode his luck a little to get here after Aslan Karatsev retired injured with their first round match at 1-1.

Kubler will receive a strong backing here in his native Brisbane but it will not be as partisan as it should be as the tennis world desperately hopes for more from one of its legends. Nadal looked in control of Thiem throughout their clash but he will arguably face a tougher challenger in Kubler. Back the Spaniard to win outright with three sets about as likely as two.

TIP: RAFAEL NADAL TO WIN
