THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Lucia Bronzetti finished runner-up to Katerina Siniakova at the Bad Homburg Open last week after receiving a huge walkover via Iga Swiatek’s withdrawal from the semi-final but the Italian should be considered an early threat here. After enduring a woeful start to her 2023 season Bronzetti claimed her maiden WTA title at the Rabat Open on clay in May. Former world number 58 Jaqueline Cristian has been working hard on the ITF circuit this season in the hope of repairing her ranking, currently outside the top 130, but she made the main draw in Wimbledon on a protected ranking. The Romanian stunned Sloane Stephens at the Madrid Open in late April to suggest form was about to blossom but she has struggled since and this first meeting with Bronzetti looks the Italian’s to lose. A quick turnaround from Bad Homburg makes this a tricky fixture for Bronzetti, though, so take her to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
