THE PREDICTION
World number 168 Jaqueline Cristian came back from a set down to stun Sloane Stephens in a tight battle on Wednesday, claiming one of the biggest wins of her career. The Romanian had not won at tour level for over a year after suffering an injury last February but she has been handed one of the tougher draws here against in-form Anastasia Potapova. 22-year-old Potapova claimed her first WTA title at the Istanbul Cup around this time last year and she impressed on clay again only recently with a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open last week. A straight-sets defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at that stage was something of an anti-climax but victories over Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia before that will have taken a toll and she should be considered a genuine threat here in Madrid, where the conditions should suit both her clay sensibilities and powerful groundstrokes. Back Potapova to beat Cristian outright here given Cristian should be feeling looser after that relieving win.
