World number eight Jannik Sinner is fast-emerging as a dark horse for a very deep run at Wimbledon after coming through his first two rounds in efficient straight sets. The 21-year-old beat Carlos Alcaraz in one of the matches of the season here last summer to reach the quarter-finals, where he took the first two sets in another thriller before defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Sinner’s portion of the draw has been blown wide open by the defeats of fourth seed Casper Ruud and eighth seed Taylor Fritz on Thursday and he will be desperate to come out on top to set-up a potential rematch with the Serb in the last eight but this is a tricky fixture to get through first. Djokovic waxed lyrical about world number 79 Quentin Halys’ potential after a tight victory over the Frenchman at Adelaide 1 back in January and the Frenchman has so far proved himself a clear top 40 talent at SW19 with blistering wins over Dan Evans and Aleksandar Vukic. Halys came in hot from a Challenger title win late last month but whilst sets could go both ways here this should be too steep of a challenge. The sensible option is taking Sinner to win outright.
