THE PREDICTION

World number two Jannik Sinner lost for only the second time this season two weeks ago in Monte-Carlo but it was a close-run three-setter against eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas that could have gone either way. The 22-year-old also fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of Indian Wells last month but otherwise he has maintained last season’s remarkable form to lift the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam title, defend the Rotterdam Open and claim his second Masters title in Miami. World number 52 Lorenzo Sonego is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests but the 28-year-old stands very little chance against Sinner, particularly in Madrid where the altitude will aid the younger Italian’s fearsome forehand. This should be a good-natured battle between friends who joined forces to bring Italy a historic Davis Cup title in November but Sinner leads their head-to-head 4-0 for a reason. Back the top seed to win in straight sets.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN 2-0
