THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Jannik Sinner won his first Masters final in four attempts with an assured performance over Alex de Minaur on Sunday. The Italian set a new career-high ATP world ranking of sixth this week after success in Toronto and he takes a four-match winning streak into this intriguing campaign in Cincinnati with very little time to depress and recalibrate. Sinner seems the sort of player well capable of doing so, though, with a maturity well beyond his years. World number 66 Dusan Lajovic has impressed this week with a strong qualifying campaign before a surprising straight-sets victory over Francisco Cerundolo and it was not long ago that the Serb found some of his best form in years to claim a second ATP title at the Banja Luka Open – defeating Novak Djokovic en-route. A first meeting between the two could be highly competitive on Lajovic’s favoured clay but this is a relatively kind opener for Sinner as he aims for a settler. Take the Italian to win in two.
