THE PREDICTION

There will be a new ATP Masters champion by the end of today’s final as world number eight Jannik Sinner and number 18 Alex de Minaur battle for the most prestigious title of their respective careers. 24-year-old De Minaur has produced the most impressive run this week with three remarkable results over Taylor Fritz, a red-hot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and former champion Daniil Medvedev. The Aussie finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Los Cabos Open last week to extend his losing streak to the Greek to 0-10 and his 0-4 deficit to Jannik Sinner heavily suggests he may suffer a similar fate here despite his herculean efforts. 21-year-old Sinner has beaten Gael Monfils, Matteo Berrettini and Tommy Paul with relative comfort this week to ghost through to the final but he has a little baggage here after losing both of his previous Masters finals – both in Miami including to Medvedev this year.

De Minaur has taken just one set from the Italian in their four meetings but anyone who beats Medvedev in these conditions has a huge chance at winning the title. Sensibly back Sinner to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions or risk, on the basis of it being his first attempt at this level, De Minaur to win the day outright.
