33-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff set a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th this week built on his remarkable run to the Madrid Open final last month, where he took Carlos Alcaraz to three sets before defeat. The German suffered an early exit to Jiri Lehecka at Roland-Garros last time out but a straight-sets victory over Zhizhen Zhang on Tuesday suggests he is refreshed and ready to make a move on the top 20 over the grass swing. World number 16 Tommy Paul beat Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets on Tuesday to get his Stuttgart campaign underway solidly and the American first started to evolve into this new top 20 version of himself on grass last summer, most notably reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon before defeat to Cam Norrie.
Paul owns a very convincing 4-0 lead over Struff in their head-to-head with the German, surprisingly, yet to even win a set – including in two meetings this season at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
