THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating rematch between Aslan Karatsev and Jan-Lennard Struff after the Russian upset Struff in qualifying last week. This will be their second match in Madrid this fortnight but a first at tour level and the stakes could not be higher as both aim to make the final of a Masters tournament for the first time. Lucky loser Struff upset Stefanos Tsitsipas in three tight sets on Thursday for a vastly impressive return on his recent resurgent form but Karatsev owns the most impressive result here after ousting compatriot Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the quarter-finals. World number 121 Karatsev has been lying dormant on tour for over a year now but he set a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th as recently as last February and this run has been a long time coming. Struff has also needed a run like this for some time to pull him back towards a rightful place around the top 40 but on ability Karatsev should be favoured to edge through here.
Both players meet with more confidence than their last match, though, which ended in straight sets. Back Karatsev to earn at least a set here and add at least a tiebreak in the match for extra value as the pair have seen eight between them this fortnight.
