THE PREDICTION

World number 51 Yannick Hanfmann enjoyed the best season if his career last year, setting a career-high of 45th after a strong clay swing and some surprising results on grass. The 32-year-old brought a four-match losing streak into 2024 but he dashed it in style with an impressive straight-sets result over fifth seed Sebastian Korda on Tuesday. World number 116 James Duckworth is one of five home hopefuls through to the round of 16 at the Brisbane International after an excellent upset of his own over J.J. Wolf in straight sets. The 31-year-old struggled to return from surgery last season but he can start 2024 with some encouragement after qualifying without dropping a set this weekend. Home advantage favours Duckworth, as should the conditions, but taking Hanfmann to earn at least a set as the likelier to edge through feels the sensible way to avoid a result. The German leads Duckworth 2-0 in their head-to-head, most recently winning in three sets in Shanghai in October.
