18-year-old Alex Michelsen will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 180th after claiming his first tour-level win at defending champion Maxime Cressy’s expense. The 19-year-old came back from a set down to stun an out-of-sorts Cressy with some impressive angles and if he can find that level again on Wednesday he should be able to edge past world number 129 James Duckworth. 31-year-old Duckworth has spent all season on the Challenger circuit so far as he desperately tries to repair his ranking, with a career-high of 46th set as recently as January last year, and he claimed his first tour-level win this season in a comeback over Constant Lestienne. Both players made full use of facing struggling opponents in the first round but Michelsen’s momentum looks the tougher force in this first encounter with Duckworth. Back the youngster to earn at least a set as the likelier of two unlikely quarter-finalists.
