THE PREDICTION

Jakub Mensik came back from a set down to beat fellow qualifier Titouan Droguet on Wednesday, backing up an excellent Grand Slam and tour debut win in four sets over Gregoire Barrere. The Czech turns 18 years old today to add an extra spot of intrigue to this potentially famous clash with world number nine Taylor Fritz, who has been caught cold by matches like this a few times in recent years. The 25-year-old has looked in excellent shape so far in New York, conceding just 10 games so far in one-sided wins over Steve Johnson and Juan Pablo Varillas, but early Grand Slam defeats to the likes of Mikael Ymer, Alexei Popyrin, Brandon Holt, Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Jenson Brooksby since the 2021 US Open certainly leave the door ajar for an upset here. Home advantage heavily favours the US number one on Louis Armstrong, on which Fritz has played both of his matches so far, and it remains to be seen whether the bigger stage positively or negatively affects Mensik. It is likely, however, given his results, to be the former.

A one-off on Mensik to earn at least a set could be the shrewd way to avoid the result here but otherwise take Fritz to win outright with three sets still the likeliest outcome.
