THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz’ weird 2023 continued on Tuesday as the Pole needed to come back from two sets down to ultimately put Marc-Andrea Huesler away in the fifth. The 26-year-old has played far too many deciding sets for a player of his level over the past 12 months to suggest there is something of a mental block hampering his progress but he remains a top 10 talent at his best, with two very tight three-set defeats to Carlos Alcaraz this month proving so. Hurkacz reached the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago by beating both finalists, Borna Coric and Stefanos Tsitsipas, from the previous summer but his wobbles on court leave all doors slightly ajar and this could end up a proper thriller. World number 123 Jack Draper has struggled to stay fit long enough this season to make use of the level he is producing on court but a straight-sets victory over Radu Albot on Tuesday was certainly encouraging. The 21-year-old stunned an in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round here last summer before an injury saw him have to withdraw from a fascinating battle with eventual semi-finalist Karen Khachanov at one set all.
Hurkacz has won both of their previous meetings in three sets, including this April in Monte-Carlos, with three of their six sets going to tiebreaks. Take the Pole to earn at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match here to guard against both the result and Draper’s still fleeing fitness.
