22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko set a career-high ATP world ranking of 96th this week after recent success at a Challenger event in Madrid two weeks ago and that should put him in good stead early on in the draw. The American qualified without dropping a set this week to make his Masters debut and a streak of seven wins on clay, in Madrid, this month is strong form by anyone’s standards despite this being his first at tour-level. World number 49 J.J. Wolf reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open back in January in a continuation of the strong form he began collecting late last season but he has struggled to find his best level since despite some strong runs. The 24-year-old remains the favourite after a decent run to the quarter-finals of the Houston Open on clay earlier this month but take Shevchenko to earn at least a set here given his more recent exploits here in Spain.
