THE PREDICTION
Hosts Italy put in a sorry performance in Bologna with world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti and number 38 Lorenzo Musetti losing to players ranked outside the top 150 in Canada’s Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau, respectively. The pair will be desperate to make amends, entrusted as they have been with the keys to Italy’s recent proud exploits in the absence of Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, but this looks an even tougher test against Chile. Matteo Arnaldi and Simone Bolelli at least provided some hope in their tight three-set defeat but a 0-3 whitewash at home will take some making up for in Bologna on Thursday.
Chile got the job done right with a 3-0 victory over Group A minnows Sweden on Tuesday and they look well capable of heaping more misery on Italy to all-but secure their passage through to the Finals in November. Former world number 17 Cristian Garin overcame Leo Borg in three tight sets but he should be better for an early scare as he continues to fluctuate wildly from fearsome to fallible from game to game whilst world number 22 Nicolas Jarry looked imperious against Elias Ymer in straight sets. A solid doubles pairing of Marcelo Barrios Vera and Alejandro Tabilo will face tougher tests than they did against Sweden this week and it could be that Garin or Jarry are drafted in for a live decider.
This looks a tough day for Italy with some pride in serious need of restoring. Both Italians trail their Chilean counterparts 0-1 in head-to-head records settled this season, with Sonego losing to Garin at the Munich Open in April and Jarry beating Musetti in straight sets at the Rio Open in February. What is more, the Chileans are arguably more comfortable on hardcourts than the Italians – although an in-form Sonego is very capable indoors. If Italy can force a decider they may just sneak the tie with better experience at that stage but Nicolas Jarry looks too much for Musetti in these conditions. Sonego should improve to look the slight favourite against Garin at home, meaning it is not too reductive to state that the winner of the first match probably takes the tie. Consider waiting for that result to make an in-play choice but on the face of it Chile look the stronger team.
