32-year-old Irina-Camelia Begu pulled within five places of her career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd this week after an excellent run at the Madrid Open saw victories over Karolina Muchova, Shelby Rogers ad Liudmila Samsonova before a three-set defeat to Maria Sakkari. The Romanian could be in for another strong run on her favoured clay if she can replicate that level here in Rome but world number 75 Xiyu Wang is no pushover in these conditions. The 22-year-old up-and-comer upset both in-form Varvara Gracheva and Bianca Andreescu in three sets apiece in Madrid and she got her Rome campaign underway solidly enough with two tiebreaks over Lucrezia Stefanini on Tuesday. A first meeting between the two should go Begu’s way on experience more than anything but three sets are a distinct possibility. Back the Romanian to win outright but consider leaving this one out of an accumulator.
