World number 93 Juan Manuel Cerundolo enjoyed an excellent run to the quarter-finals of Winston-Salem this week with impressive upsets over Roman Safiullin and Yannick Hanfmann. The 21-year-old famously won his maiden ATP title on his tur debut at the 2021 Cordoba Open but he has struggled to find that intensity practically ever since whilst elder brother Francisco has come on leaps and bounds to break the top 20 this year. World number 103 Ilya Ivashka brings a poor 9-17 record for 2023 into the US Open from a torrid season so far but the Belarussian is capable of much better tennis in these conditions. A run to the quarter-finals of the Los Cabos Open earlier this month was tentatively encouraging but this first meeting between the two is wide open. Ivashka reached the round of 16 here last summer to match his best Grand Slam effort from Wimbledon the previous year and taking him to earn at least two sets looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
