World number one Iga Swiatek beat Claire Liu 6-4, 6-0 on Thursday to emulate her first round scoreline over Cristina Bucsa but the defending champion still has several gears to reach yet in Paris. The 22-year-old won her first Grand Slam here back in 2020 without dropping a set in a fearsome precursor to the player she would become and she dropped just one en-route to her second major last summer before taking a third at the US Open. 21-year-old Xinyu Wang is a surprise third round debutante after upsetting 31st seed Marie Bouzkova on Tuesday before another impressive win over Rebecca Peterson on Thursday. The Chinese looks set to be a top 20 player one day with all the attributes required but this first meeting with Swiatek should be way too steep a climb. Swiatek has some interesting threats to come in her title defence this fortnight but she can be backed to coast through in two here.
