THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek remains the clear favourite to lift the Madrid Open title this weekend after conceding just three games to Petra Martic on Wednesday. The 21-year-old has twice won the Italian Open but this would be her first in Madrid should she make it through after she missed out here last season to rest up ahead of Rome and Roland-Garros amidst her remarkable 37-match winning streak. World number 13 Veronika Kudermetova has been due a deep run like this after struggling to impose herself for much of this season so far. The 26-year-old has battled through four three-set matches so far to oust in-form Anastasia Potapova, an excellent clay-courter in Daria Kasatkina and now world number three Jessica Pegula, the latter of whom finished runner-up here last season. Kudermetova is likely to be feeling at least a little daunted coming into this semi-final given that Swiatek has totally dominated their last three encounters, including a 6-0, 6-1 victory at this stage of the Qatar Open back in February. Back the Pole to win in straight sets.
