THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek reached the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open this week but she withdrew from the tournament on Friday with potential food poisoning. The 22-year-old should recover in time to face Lin Zhu on Monday but the illness is certainly not ideal preparation on what is her weakest surface, with a run to the round of 16 her beat effort here back in 2021. Swiatek recently won her third Roland-Garros title with a thrilling victory over Karolina Muchova and she won the US Open last summer to make it four Grand Slam titles already. The Pole saw her remarkable 37-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of Alize Cornet in the third round here last season but she comes in with far less pressure on her shoulders as the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have improved since then to offer creditable rivalries on tour. 29-year-old Lin Zhu moved back up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd this week after reaching the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic and there is the slightest scent of an upset in this first meeting between the two given Swiatek’s illness. Wait for the Pole to take to court but if she does she should be coming through in straight sets.
