THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek is the two-time defending champion at the Italian Open and she played like it on Friday, handing former world number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova a double bagel. The 21-year-old came into Rome with the sudden pressure of having to outplay Aryna Sabalenka, who beat her in the Madrid final last Saturday, to keep hold of her spot at the top of the sport but she can focus on making it three titles in a row after the Belarussian became one of many seeds to drop from the draw. Elena Rybakina is realistically the only creditable threat to Swiatek’s campaign left in the draw after Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur all departed in the second round but world number 68 Lesia Tsurenko should not be completely dismissed after two strong wins this week. The 33-year-old has impressed over the last 12 months, particularly on grass and clay, but she has so far lost to top 10 opposition in 2023. Swiatek beat Tsurenko comfortably at last summer’s Roland-Garros and she can be backed to take this in two too.
