THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek began the defence of her title here in Stuttgart well on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over Qinwen Zheng. The 21-year-old won this tournament amongst a remarkable 37-match winning streak last season and so far she has managed to defend two of four in Qatar and Indian Wells, with a defeat to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in Dubai and an injury seeing her miss out on Miami. Former world number one Karolina Pliskova’s super serve and wingspan makes her a serious force on indoors clay conditions and she has so far ousted Maria Sakkari and Donna Vekic to look a real threat here. Swiatek, however, handed the Czech a double bagel in their only previous encounter in the Italian Open final back in 2021 and it should be impossible for that result not to weight at least slightly on Pliskova’s mind. It would be reasonably surprising to see Pliskova take a set here, so back Swiatek to win in straight sets.
