THE LOWDOWN
World number one Iga Swiatek is through to her third Roland-Garros final in four years after surviving an excellent fightback from Beatriz Haddad-Maia to edge through in straight sets. The Pole has only lost to Maria Sakkari, whilst injured, in Paris since her incredible run to the 2020 title without dropping a set and she is through to this final in the same fashion, with her last dropped set coming against Qinwen Zheng in the round of 16 last summer. Swiatek has lost just three finals out of 15 on tour since claiming her first here in 2020, although two of those defeats came earlier this season to Sabalenka in Madrid and Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters.
26-year-old Karolina Muchova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 16th no matter the outcome here after a thrilling victory over Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday saw her take the first and then fight back admirably to turn the screw in the third. The Czech’s previous career-high of 19th was reached after stunning Ash Barty to make the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2021 but a string of unfortunate injuries have hampered her progress until this season’s remarkable rise back up the rankings. Muchova’s only WTA title came at the Korea Open in 2019, giving her a 50% record in finals after losing in Prague that same season.
THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Iga Swiatek will retain her world number one status no matter the outcome here after Aryna Sabalanka’s shock loss to Karolina Muchova on Thursday but whilst Sabalenka looked the stronger challenger it would be wise not to underestimate Muchova. The Czech beat Swiatek, on clay, at the Prague Open in 2019, en-route to the final there, but there is no doubt at all that the Pole is a totally different prospect now. Swiatek’s dominance at Roland-Garros shows no signs of being thwarted over the next few seasons even as she sees plenty of challengers rising up the rankings across the rest of the tour. Muchova is a serious talent with plenty of weapons but clay is arguably her weakest surface, although that is hard to argue now. The Czech is well capable of taking this to a decider, and she is experienced enough to take advantage of an off day from her opponent, but the most likely outcome here is that Swiatek exerts her force to win a fourth Grand Slam title in straight sets.
