THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek has conceded just nine games so far in her defence of the US Open title, with her victory over Kaja Juvan on Friday her second 6-0 6-1 this week. The 22-year-old claimed her fourth Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros in June, her third in four years in Paris, but she was closely challenged by Karolina Muchova in that final as top 10 players around her continue to improve. This match could as easily be another straight-sets dismantling as much as a three-set epic where former world number five Jelena Ostapenko is concerned as the Latvian holds a remarkable 3-0 head-to-head record over Swiatek. 26-year-old Ostapenko was the last player to beat the Pole early last season, in three sets in Dubai, before Swiatek embarked on that transformative 37-match winning streak and it will be fascinating to see what transpires in this showdown late on Arthur Ashe.
Each of Ostapenko’s last seven matches have gone to three sets as she continues to struggle with maintaining a consistent level but she will be desperate to throw everything she has at this clash and that is really the only provable method of upsetting the world number one – risk it all offensively. The suitably cautious move is taking Swiatek to earn at least a set here but the Pole should be able to claim her first win over Ostapenko as a better player since their last match.
