World number one Iga Swiatek came back from a set down to beat Belinda Bencic in a proper thriller on Sunday night, reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time. The 22-year-old had never played two tiebreaks in a match on tour before, testament to her utter ruthlessness over the past few years, but she will be ecstatic with her progression on grass after looking well off the pace here last summer. Swiatek won her third Roland-Garros title last month to make it four Grand Slams since her first there in 2020 and she has now reached at least the quarter-finals at all four majors.
ELINA SVITOLINA
Former world number three Elina Svitolina came back from a one-sided set down to Victoria Azarenka to win an incredible match on Sunday night, overcoming the former world number one 11-9 in the deciding tiebreak. The 28-year-old has looked a totally different player in recent weeks from the one who left the tour to have her first child last season, fast-tracking her return to the top of the sport with a 17th WTA title claimed at the Strasbourg Open and now back-to-back quarter-finals made at Grand Slams. Svitolina was ranked outside of the top 500 at the beginning of Strasbourg but she will move back inside the top 40 no matter the outcome here.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating encounter between world number one Iga Swiatek, impressing on her weakest surface so far, and former number three Elina Svitolina who has returned from maternity leave with a new-found offence to match her previous defence. The Ukrainian was always a threat at Grand Slams without truly looking a true contender against the very best players but her comeback over Azarenka on Sunday was further proof of the more proactive style she has returned with. Svitolina was desperate to beat the Belarussian for her war-torn nation and she beat back-to-back Russian players in Roland-Garros before eventually coming unstuck against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka. Facing a Pole in Iga Swiatek may take some of that drive away but there I certainly scope for an upset after Belinda Bencic proved Swiatek was more vulnerable on this surface than elsewhere. Swiatek, though, should improve on her excellent comeback after setting a new milestone at SW19 to boost her self-belief. Back Swiatek to win outright here with three sets about as likely as two.
