THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating litmus test of a clash between world number one Iga Swiatek and number four Elena Rybakina as they face off for the first time this year. Swiatek took their first encounter in straight sets back in 2021 but Rybakina has won each of their last three to lead 3-1, including all three meetings last season at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Italian Open – the latter via an injury. It is notable that the Kazakh has gone on to win the tournament in every occasion in which she has beaten Swiatek and that stat would, obviously, continue in this Doha final but Swiatek is the two-time defending champion here having barely broken a sweat so far this week. A walk-over to the finals at Karolina Pliskova’s expense will see the Pole the fresher of the two but Rybakina is riding a seven-match winning streak after success in Abu Dhabi last week, her second WTA title this season after stunning world number two Aryna Sabalenka in Brisbane last month.
Swiatek has yet to win a tournament three times on the spin, although she will be the favourite to do so in Paris this summer, but she has looked the slightly less fragile of two imperious elites this week to suggest at least a set in her favour is the sensible way to avoid a result here. If forced to pick a victor, gut feeling edges towards Swiatek as she has spent the off season working on a way to better tackle the likes of Rybakina.
