World number one Iga Swiatek looks to be enjoying playing without the pressure of defending a title for the first time since the Australian Open as she won a remarkable six tournaments on the spin this time last season. The 21-year-old missed out Madrid last year to prepare to defend her Rome title but without defending champion Ons Jabeur here in Madrid the Pole looks the solid favourite to claim her 14th WTA title this weekend. World number 17 Ekaterina Alexandrova reached the semi-finals here last season before defeat to Jabeur and she came back from a set down to Qinwen Zheng on Sunday to emulate that strong run so far. The 28-year-old beat Swiatek in straight sets in their first encounter at the Gippsland Trophy back in 2021 but Swiatek levelled their head-to-head 1-1 after a three-set tussle at the Ostrava Open last October. It is notable that Alexandrova has taken at least a set in both of their previous encounters but this first meeting on clay should see the world number one through in straight sets all the same.
