THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek has been well challenged this week by top Czech Karolinas, first overcoming former world number one Karolina Pliskova via an 8-6 tiebreak and then out-lasting Karolina Muchova in three on Thursday. The 22-year-old also beat Muchova in a close three-setter to win her third Roland-Garros title in June, her fourth Grand Slam overall after she claimed the US Open for a first time last September. There are so many more challengers to the throne on hardcourts this season as the Pole gears up for a title defence in New York but this is no gimme against a suddenly resurgent Danielle Collins. The former world number seven appears to have awoken from her slumber with a vengeance this week, coming through qualifying a little shakily before blasting through three top players in Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari and Leylah Fernandez.
The 29-year-old stunned Swiatek in the semi-finals of the Australian Open last season before finishing runner-up to Ash Barty but Swiatek leads their head-to-head 2-1 after a blistering win in Qatar in February. Back Swiatek to win outright with three sets a distinct possibility.
