THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek looks in much tighter shape than last week’s run to the Canada Masters semi-finals, where she lost in three sets to eventual champion Jessica Pegula. The 22-year-old came through a tight first set via a tiebreak against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova before blasting through the second and she has dropped just the one set this week to an impressive Qinwen Zheng before similarly motoring through. This should be one of the more competitive encounters between Swiatek and world number seven Coco Gauff, who has thoroughly impressed on the hardcourt swing so far with a first WTA 500 title won in Washington earlier this month. The teenager has reached the semi-finals without dropping a set this week after dominating Jasmine Paolini on Friday but she has failed to take a set from Swiatek in seven defeats from seven meetings, including twice this season in Dubai and at Roland-Garros. Their first encounter in Rome two years ago saw a tiebreak but since then matches have been almost uncomfortably one-sided in the Poel’s favour, so back the top seed to win in straight sets here.
