THE LOWDOWN
World number one Iga Swiatek was not at her best in a tight match with Jule Niemeier but she proved her champion’s credentials in a straight set victory. The 21-year-old won her second and third Grand Slam titles last season at Roland-Garros, where she won her first in 2020, and later at the US Open. Swiatek won a total of eight titles last season including six in a row between February and June as she set this century’s winning streak record at 37 matches. The Pole first showed signs of the year she would go on to have in a huge run to the semi-finals here before defeat to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins.
THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Camila Osorio conce3ded just five games to Panna Udvardy in an encouraging opener on Monday but the Colombian has drawn the shortest straw in tennis here. Osorio set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd last Spring and the current world number 84 should be targeting a much stronger clay swing in 2023 on her favoured surface where she may well meet Swiatek a few times more. This first meeting between the two favours the Pole heavily, though, so back Swiatek to win in straight sets after passing an early test.
