World number one Iga Swiatek and number two Aryna Sabalenka will meet each other in a second-successive final on tour after Swiatek won their Stuttgart Open final in straight sets late last month. The 21-year-old conceded just two games to Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday in a statement of intent and she has conceded just five games overall since dropping a set in a tight clash with Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16. 24-year-old Sabalenka also dropped a set this week to an inspired Mayar Sherif but she has conceded just eight games since after a dominant display over Maria Sakkari in the semi-finals. The Belarussian won her third of three Masters titles here back in 2021 but there is no doubt that Swiatek is the favourite to claim her first Madrid Open title here as the clear and present top competitor on clay on tour.
The high altitude does help level the playing field a little for big-serving Sabalenka but Swiatek is just as powerful in her own remarkable way during the rallies.
