THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Alexander Zverev is a two-time champion here in Madrid from 2018 and 2021 and six of his 19 ATP titles have come on clay. The 26-year-old did well to come back from a set down to beat in-form clay specialist Roberto Carballes Baena on Friday and a third-set bagel suggests he will be much better for it in this next match. 27-year-old Hugo Gremier has four wins already this week after coming through qualifying well to beat an out-of-sorts Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday and then impressively beat the returning Sebastian Korda in two tiebreaks on Friday. Despite the Frenchman’s excellent foray into the third round on his Masters debut it is unlikely that Zverev trips up now after surviving an early scare. The high altitude in Madrid makes this one of the fastest clay courts on tour and that suits the German down to a tee, so back Zverev to win outright here or risk the straight sets.
