THE PREDICTION
Expect one of the best atmospheres of the first round here on Tuesday as Hugo Gaston is a cult hero in these parts. The world number 109 famously reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros on his debut back in 2020, taking Dominic Thiem to five sets before defeat after stunning former champion Stan Wawrinka by the same scoreline in the third round. The 22-year-old upset 20th seed Alex de Minaur in five sets here last season en-route to a third round exit to Holger Rune, with his three best runs on tour coming in the French capital after a shock win over Carlos Alcaraz took him to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters in 2021. World number 86 Alex Molcan has by far the better form coming into this first meeting between the two but the Slovak will face a true partisan atmosphere and a fellow left-hander, which limits some of his game on clay. 25-year-old Molcan is also at his best on clay but he has struggled since a run to the semi-finals of the Banja Luka Open last month.
Molcan would be the favourite to win anywhere else on tour but back Gaston to earn at least two sets here as the home favourite or consider a one-off on this match to see five sets.
