THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Hubert Hurkacz conceded just five games to Alexander Shevchenko on Thursday to look a solid title contender here in Marseille. The top seed set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth after an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month and his four-set victory over Ugo Humbert there bodes well for his chances this week if he can get past up-and-coming Tomas Machac. 23-year-old Machac will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 61st after ousting Andy Murray and sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti without dropping a set so far and he stunned Frances Tiafoe in similar fashion to reach the third round in Melbourne last month. The Czech has stumbled across an excellent doubles partnership with Zhizhen Zhang, with whom he reached the Australian Open Men’s Doubles semi-finals, and their form appears to be informing their respective singles level. Hurkacz is one of the very best on tour in these conditions but there is a lot of potential for better in Machac that makes an outright call for the Pole the suitably cautious call.
TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN
